Peaches Live in Singapore 28th April @ Zirca!
From Australia’s Big Day Out to the US of A’s Coachella, Peaches has stomped her way around the globe and turned all heads along the way with her cutting-edge music and her outrageously fierce sense of style. As today’s definitive icon of innovation, the Canadian-born dance electro punk musician has unabashedly brought sex and sexuality to her art (Fatherfucker, anyone?) and reinvented fashion, bringing individualism to a level beyond. Peaches’ brand of the original dirty classic has gone live from Japan to Europe and infiltrated the soundtracks of films like Love Actually and TV shows like The L Word. This April, HOME and John Robinson are proud to bring you the freshest sound of Peaches Live in Singapore!

The Star interview By Daryl Goh
Hong Kong-based indie music distributor Love Da Records has big hopes as it boldly expands into the Malaysian market. VAMPIRE Weekend, Midlake, Beach House, Los Campesinos, Delphic, Holly Miranda, and many other niche albums sporting indie respectability, are not the sort of releases from non-mainstream labels that you often find on local music racks. But, thanks largely to Hong Kong-based imprint Love Da Records, new albums by those acts and more are now easily available in record stores in the Klang Valley. Love Da Records, which has been distributing indie labels in Hong Kong for 11 years, is gradually making its presence felt in this part of the world. First up was the expansion plan with a Singapore distribution office established four years ago. Now the label is looking at the Malaysian music scene as the next obvious market to work on. To date, Love Da Records operates offices in Hong Kong, Singapore and has a small team of support/promo staff in Kuala Lumpur. “I think we’ve moved into the Malaysian market at the right time with the pulse of indie music stronger than ever before,” said Tommy Chan, the CEO of Love Da Records in a recent interview in Kuala Lumpur. “In fact, Malaysia has always been on Love Da’s radar. It’s an exciting market to be involved in because it’s got a strong English-language base and an untapped market of music fans with sophisticated tastes. That makes selling niche releases a lot easier. “It’s also taken us time to explore new territories because of licensing and distribution factors,” he explained. With over 50 independent labels signed exclusively to Love Da Records, including 4AD, Kitsune, Bella Union, XL, Warp, Rough Trade, Jagjaguar, Strut, V2, Co-op, Matador, and Drag City, there is a healthy roster of monthly releases to maintain. The hype and marketability behind Love Da Records releases, more often than not, is generated by the US and British music media. For instance, Vampire Weekend’s sophomore album Contra was a recent Billboard No.1 album and it is a core release for Love Da Records to capitalise on. Other significant 2010 releases include Midlake’s The Courage Of Others and Beach House’s Teen Dream, typical word-of-mouth albums with a strong street buzz. The year is still young, but Chan is already predicting a bumper crop of good indie albums ahead, including Holly Miranda’s debut, and offerings by Blood Red Shoes, Mamas Gun and Two Door Cinema Club. Chan, sporting a Ninja Tune cap and black T-shirt, talks a good game when it comes to indie music. He may be busy as the main man/founder of Love Da Records but this music maverick is hands-on with his products. Far from being the corporate major label stereotype, Chan remains a music fan at heart and he also deejays when he has free time. “We’re not pre-occupied with the platinum-chasing game here. We support the music that we believe in, you know, from the smaller, non-multinational labels ... we want to share it and make it available.” Chan also prefers to stay behind the scenes, declines photographs but gets rather animated when talking about new indie bands. “I’d rather tell you about the new Beach House CD which is absolutely amazing. You know, Love Da has been distributing indie music for 11 years now and I still get a buzz when we get sent advance copies of albums ... if you love music, you know the passion that comes with it,” he added. At 43, this former accountant, has seen his independent HK distribution label grow from strength to strength. In the early years, he recalled that the label was very much an electronic/dance-based imprint, built up with Warp, Ninja Tune, Global Underground and Ministry of Sound releases. “The music landscape has changed a lot since the 1990s ... you got the whole indie boom, guitar band scene making a big impression now. Music fans are no longer detached by distance. From Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur, names like Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, The XX and Temper Trap are easily recognisable. “But one of the key releases that shifted Love Da’s focus to indie was Sigur Ros. We had their early albums under Fat Cat. It was a huge challenge but we managed to put them on the HK album charts and they sold well.” He thumbed through a list of Love Da Records high points and with some pride, he pointed out how the label was catapulted into regional awareness by the Asian breakthroughs of Nouvelle Vague, Koop, Cinematic Orchestra right to last year’s newcomer act Emmy the Great. “For some acts, we have direct management deals. We put a lot of effort into Emmy the Great, bringing the band over for gigs in Singapore and Hong Kong while Canadian indie act Metric has given us exclusive tracks for a bonus disc.” Apart from indie and dance releases, there are also metal imprints like Century Media, Peaceville and Ear Music to cater to the Malaysian metal/rock fans. “It’s a step-by-step presence for us in Malaysia. You’d be surprised by the range of releases that we distribute ... it’s a music fan’s label.” Over the past 10 months, the label has also stepped out of distribution and ventured into the live circuit, hosting Emmy the Great, Little Dragon, Telepathe and Patrick Watson in Hong Kong and Singapore. Chan doesn’t discount having a couple of live acts for the Malaysian market this year. And, who is to doubt Love Da Records’ ambitions? This coming from a bold independent label that has already put out more good music on the racks in the last two months than all three major labels here combined. ■ Browse love-da-records.com, email: info@love-da-records.com. Love Da Records releases are currently available at the major Rock Corner outlets in the Klang Valley.

LANEWAY ACTS HEAD TO SINGAPORE! Florence & the Machine, The xx, and ECHO & the Bunnymen to play back to back concerts at the Esplanade in February 2010
Singapore – Three of the headliners from Australia’s famed Laneway Festival will make a stopover in Singapore following their Australian engagement. Yes it is confirmed – Florence & the Machine, the flame-haired ingenue and her band, will perform in Singapore for the first time on February 7th. Joining them will be the darlings of the Internet music fraternity, The xx. Post-punk legends Echo & the Bunnymen perform at the Esplanade the following night ~ February 8.
Michael Chugg, Promoter of the Laneway Festival in Australia, made a statement in Singapore last week announcing that these three sensational acts are to perform in 2010, ahead of the Laneway Festival’s anticipated Singapore debut in 2011.
The beguiling London three-piece The xx will open the February 7 show and are sure to win a legion of new fans with their unique blend of music which embraces an artistic thread that resonates with critics and fans due to the universal influences that pepper their repetoire. This critically acclaimed band of quiet achievers are a compelling live act and Singapore fans are in for a treat.
Performing the same night is award winning indie artiste Florence & The Machine. Equipped with a mega voice and a repetoire of songs including radio favourites ‘Kiss With a Fist’, ‘Dog Days Are Over’ and ‘The Drumming Song’ from her roundly praised debut album ‘Lungs’, Florence has been hailed by UK daily The Times as "the most peculiar and most highly acclaimed female singer of the moment". The album has been in the top 40 UK charts for 22 consecutive weeks, going three times platinum in the UK alone. Classy and confident with a vocal range that is as big as the imagination it expresses, Florence will be completely in her element with her Singapore fans absorbing every sound, lyric and action.
February 8 will see UK heroes Echo & The Bunnymen take the stage. The legendary post-punk band have authored countless hits including ‘The Killing Moon’, ‘Silver’, ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ and acclaimed records like the groundbreaking 1980’s classics Crocodiles and Ocean Rain. It is hard to underestimate their influence on contemporary music with their music often cited as the inspiration for bands like Suede, Pavement, Elbow and Interpol. All of whom owe much of their influences to the Bunnymen’s brooding soundscapes, pulsating guitars and subversive attitude. They have recently released The Fountain which the band feels is comparable to the now iconic “Ocean Rain.” A return to the stage that is not to be missed.

Metric - Fantasies Bonus Edition (Love Da Records)
(Release: Out Now!)

Metric, the Canadian indie rock band, having already gone platinum with a number one Canadian single from their last album, “Live it Out”, followed it up with new album “Fantasies” which critics have already hailed as their best so far.
“A beautifully constructed, shiny, shimmying pop belter…one butterfly that’s bound to cause a hurricane” ~ NME
“Metric are one of those bands who never seem to go wrong. The band has outdone themselves... Not just because it’s a good album, but because it’s a layering of everything Metric have created in the past with a sense of immediate passion.” ~ ALTERNATIVE PRESS
The album was released in April 09 in US/Canada – this special bonus edition released exclusively by Love Da Records has 6 extra tracks, including the remix of “Gold Guns Girls” by Mike Shinoda (theme for his ‘Glorious Excess(Dies)’), Adam Freeland’s remix of “Sick Muse” and some exclusive B-sides tracks.

Katatonia - Night Is The New Day (Peaceville)
(Release: Out Now!)
The new studio album from Sweden’s Katatonia Night is the New Day is Katatonia’s eighth studio album. It was recorded throughout July 2009 and was co-produced, engineered and mixed by David Castillo. A continuation of the heaviness, depth and atmosphere of their previous album, Night Is the New Day is also a more multi-dimensional effort - waltzing between prog moments, doom, folk and the classic melodic anthems that are the staple of Katatonia’s uncompromising sound, completed by the haunting tones of Jonas Renkse’s vocal journeys of urban and emotional decay.
On the back of the monumental and most successful album to date, 2006’s The Great Cold Distance - including three singles and an American and European tour - there came a period of soulsearching from the Swedes, facing a task of making a worthy and relevant successor to the ground-breaking album. With a conscious effort not to merely repeat themselves, Katatonia took their time with their next steps, while Anders and Jonas also remained busy with death metal group Bloodbath, alongside Mikael and Martin from Opeth.

Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More (V2)
(Release: Out Now!)

'Sigh No More' is the eagerly anticipated debut album from London four piece, Mumford And Sons. Formed from the same West London scene that has given rise to the likes of Laura Marling, Jay Jay Pistolet and Noah and The Whale, yet with a much broader and wider spread appeal.
"Initially known as the on-off backing band for Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons finally step out of the shadows with 'Sigh No More', staking its claim as The Band to the elfin one's Bob Dylan. The result is a record to rouse rabbles and warm cockles in equal measure, full of salty words to the wise and buoyed by Arcade Fire and Maccabees accomplice Markus Dravs' slick production job" - NME

Fink- Sort Of Revolution (Ninja Tune)
(Release: Out Now!)

Certainly one of the more understated of the world’s singer-songwriters, the Bristol, UK-born Fink, aka Fin Greenall, is an uncompromising artist with an astounding stage presence.
In addition to his performance history, Fink has written with such artists as John Legend and Amy Winehouse, while lending his remixing skills to the works of Elbow, Nina Simone, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Robert Belfour,. And prior to all of this, Fink, who grew up in the same city as Roni Size, Portishead, and Massive Attack, was a Ninja Tune DJ – spinning trip-hop and breaks in clubs all over the world.
“Mean moody and magnificent. One of the most original singer-songwriters around.” Clash
“Surprises when you least expect it. Sort of Revolution refuses to succumb to the obvious.” Mojo

Volcano Choir - Unmap (Love Da Records)
(Release: 12th Oct 09)

Unmap ultimately came together over a weekend in November 2008 in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, at Justin and Nate Vernon's recording studio. And while it is at its heart a record about the allure of being with people you need and making something with them, it is also a document created by musicians with rare gifts getting together to exorcise their ideas about beauty. This scaffolding of loops and off grid tempos for choral style vocals offers a state of continual surprise, call it unexpectation.
Unmap marks the debut full-length from Volcano Choir, the collaboration between Collections of Colonies of Bees and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver.

Vitalic - Flashmob (Different)
(Release: 28th Sep 09)

In a time when words such as “pioneer” and “innovator” get tossed around far too easily, Vitalic like his Gallic peers Daft Punk, is part of a dying breed that actually warrants such epithets. With the one-two punch of his incendiary “Poney EP”, followed by his seminal 2005 debut “OK Cowboy”, Vitalic pretty much singlehandedly invented a whole new phase of dance music.
Vitalic is back with “Flashmob”, a brand new album. Comprising 13 razor sharp nuggets of perfectly formed, ruthlessly effective electro, it is a stunning return to the musical landscape, and one that is certain to knock everyone for six.

DAVID SYLVIAN – Manafon (Release: 14th Sep 09)

David Sylvian is a man apart. In a thirty-year career that spans the New Romantic movement, ambient works and progressive rock, and mature and esoteric pop, Sylvian has tested popular styles and bent them to his own vision. But the ‘00s have seen a more extreme side of his work. While 2003’s Blemish startled long-time fans with its emotional rigour, Sylvian has taken the next step with Manafon – a work of nuance and stern musicality, that is also intriguing, suspenseful, and horribly beautiful.
